CHISAGO LAKES HIGH SCHOOL

LETTERING INFORMATION

 

LETTERING REQUIREMENTS:  The head coach/advisor of an activity sets the requirements.  The Activities Director reviews these policies.  Specific requirements are printed herein.

 

TYPES OF SCHOOL LETTERS:

1.   An Athletic Letter can be earned in each varsity level sport.

2.   A Fine Arts Letter can be earned by accumulating 200 points in various Fine Arts activities.

3.   An Academic letter is awarded when a student achieves a GPA of 3.0 or above for ten quarters.  These need not be consecutive.

4.   Several school Academic Clubs also provide an opportunity to earn a letter.

 

LETTER AWARDS:  Certificates are awarded each time a participant earns a letter.  Each student can receive one chenille letter during his or her career.  Chevrons and insignias are the responsibility of the student to purchase.  Each sport conducts a post-season gathering at which athletes are recognized for their accomplishments.

 

LETTERING RESTRICTIONS:  Coaches/Advisors reserve the right to withhold letters from participants who display conduct and attitudes detrimental to the team, regardless of participation.

 

SENIOR ATHLETIC AWARDS:  A student who has participated in a sport four years (9-12) and has earned a letter in the sport at least once will receive a senior award.

 

 

ATHLETICS

 

ALPINE SKIING – BOYS/GIRLS

1.   Lettering will be based upon points earned during the season.

2.   If a player does not finish the competitive season for any reason, the coaching staff will determine if a letter should be awarded.

 

BASEBALL

1.   To earn a varsity baseball letter, a player must play 18 innings at the varsity level.

2.   If a player does not finish the competitive season for any reason, the coaching staff will determine if a letter should be awarded.

 

BASKETBALL – BOYS

1.   To qualify for a varsity letter, a player must play in 26 varsity halves.

2.   The year a conference championship is won all members of the varsity team earn a letter.

3.   A player who violates any MSHSL rule forfeits the opportunity to earn a letter or any post-season award.

4.   Must put in 5 hours of community service.

5.   Complete entire season.

6.   All lettering decisions are at the coaches’ discretion.

 

BASKETBALL – GIRLS

1.   To qualify for a varsity letter, a player must participate in 26 varsity halves.

2.   Meet and obey all Minnesota State High School league rules during season.

3.   Complete entire season.

4.   Complete a post season exit interview.

5.   Coaches will use discretion to award or withhold a letter to any player.

6.   Managers need two years of service to letter.

7.   Must put in 5 hours of community service.

 

CHEERLEADING

1.      A member of the cheer squad must attend 90% of all practices, games and other cheer functions.  Absences must be excused.  More than one unexcused absence will result in not lettering.

2.      The coach and/or administration reserve the right to deny lettering if a member has incurred a serious infraction of the rules of CLHS, the MSHSL or the rules set forth by the coach, regardless of having achieved the 90% attendance at functions.

3.      Members who do not letter will receive a certificate of participation.

 

CROSS COUNTRY RUNNING – BOYS/GIRLS

1.   Must follow Minnesota State High School League's rules for eligibility.

2.   Must run varsity in over half the meets.

3.   Must be a team person, one that helps each other out during practice and meets.

4.   Coaches reserve the right to letter any individual whose conduct and attitude contributes to the success of the team; regardless of the number of meets he has earned points in during the season.

5.   Coaches reserve the right to withhold letters from athletes who display conduct and attitude detrimental to the team, regardless of the number of points earned during the season.

 

DANCE TEAM

1.   In order to letter in dance team dancers must:

a.       attend 90% of practices and may not have any unexcused absences

b.      perform in at least 3 competitions

c.       maintain a positive attitude and cannot have more than one behavioral sanction against them during the season

2.   Lettering will be at the coaches’ discretion.

 

FOOTBALL

1.   To earn a letter in football a player must earn 20 points.  Points can be earned by doing the following:

a.       Play in a varsity quarter

b.      Pre approved community service / volunteer activities

c.       GPA of 3.0 or better for Term 1

d.      Black Shirt Award

e.       100 % practice attendance

f.       Playoff roster

g.      Post season test out

h.      Post season exit interview

2.   Players will be responsible to record their points.

3.   A player who does anything that is detrimental to the Chisago Lakes football program will be subject to lose points.

4.   The head coach will use discretion to award or withhold a letter to any player.


GOLF – BOYS/GIRLS

To letter, a player must have two varsity qualifying scores.  A qualifying score is a score that is used to determine a team total (usually the top four individual scores.)  Ties are included.

 

GYMNASTICS

1.   Attendance: All parts of the attendance requirement must be met.

a.   A team member must not miss more than 8 practices.  (Extended illness will be taken into account with a physicians note.)  A combination of three late arrivals and/or three early releases equals one absence.

b.   Attendance is required at 100% of the meets (arrangements may be made with the head coach in the event of extenuating circumstances.)

c.   No more than one unexcused absence (practice or meets) is acceptable.  The athlete may be cut from the squad if more than one unexcused absence occurs.

2.   Points: A gymnast must accumulate 22 meet and/or place points in order to receive a varsity letter.  These may be accumulated in several ways.

a.   A gymnast will receive one point in each meet where she competes at least one event varsity (limit one point per meet.)

b.   A gymnast will receive one point in each meet where her score is used as part of the team score.  This means scoring as one of the top four individuals on the team in her event (limit one point per meet.)

c.   Meet place points are earned as follows:

                  Dual Meets                  Large Meets

                        1st - 5 pts.                   1st - 10 pts.     6th - 5 pts.

                        2nd - 4 pts.                  2nd -  9 pts.     7th - 4 pts.

                        3rd - 3 pts.                   3rd -  8 pts.     8th - 3 pts.

                        5th - 1 pt.                    5th -  6 pts.      10th - 1 pt.

d.   Bonus points may be earned for exceptional attendance:

            No more than 4 absences = 2 bonus points, perfect attendance = 4 bonus points.

3.   Attitude is everything.  No letter will be awarded to an athlete, regardless of other requirements met, if she displays a poor attitude towards coaches, teammates, opposing teams or judges.

4.   If a gymnast does not finish the competitive season for any reason, the coaching staff will determine if a letter should be awarded.  If an injury occurs, the gymnast is still to report to practice every day.

 

HOCKEY – BOYS

1.   Participate in seven (7) varsity games.  Must play at least one shift a game.

2.   Meet and obey all Minnesota State High School league rules during season.

3.   Complete entire season.

4.   Coaches reserve the right to letter any individual whose conduct and attitudes contributes to the success of the team, regardless of the number of games he or she has played in during the season.

5.   Coaches also reserve the right to withhold letters from individuals who display conduct and attitudes detrimental to the success of the team, regardless of meeting the above criteria.

6.   Managers need two years of service to letter.

 

HOCKEY – GIRLS

1.   A player must play at least 1/3 of all varsity scheduled games.  If a player does not finish the season for any reason, the head coach will determine if a letter should be awarded.

2.   Players are expected to attend all practices and to be on time.  No more than one unexcused absence (practices or games) is acceptable.

3.   The head coach reserves the right to withhold letters from players who display conduct and attitudes detrimental to the squad, regardless of participation.

4.   All lettering decisions are at the coach’s discretion.

 

SOFTBALL

1.   Only varsity players are eligible to letter.

2.   A player must play 20 innings at the Varsity level.

3.   A player who violates any MSHSL rule forfeits the opportunity to earn a letter or any post-season award.

4.   All lettering decisions are at the coaches’ discretion.

5.   Complete the entire season.

 

SWIMMING & DIVING – BOYS

1.   ATTENDANCE:  The following requirements must all be met to earn a varsity letter:

a.   Attendance is required at 100% of the meets (arrangements may be made with the head coach in the event of extenuating circumstances.)

b.   No more than one unexcused absence (practice or meets) is acceptable.  A combination of three late arrivals and/or three early releases equals one absence.

2.   PLUS:  At least one of the following must be met to earn a letter:

a.   Senior – Be on the team at least 3 years and be a positive team member.

b.   Points - For Swimming - average at least 3 points per dual or tri meet, 8 meets equals 24 points.  For Diving - 20 diving points or a total of 24 swimming and diving points.

c.   Sections/State – Compete at the section meet or be an alternate for state relay or compete at state.

d.   Time Standards:

      200 yd Free          2:05.0                  100 yd Fly      1:08.0               100 yd Back      1:08.0

3.      ATTITUDE:  No letter will be awarded to an athlete, regardless of other requirements met, if they are displaying poor sportsmanship or have been suspended from the team for disciplinary reasons.

4.      MANAGERS: Must attend all meets and attend all afternoon practices unless prior arrangements have been made and be willing to provide support/help for coaches in timing, data entry, and managing equipment.

 


SWIMMING & DIVING- GIRLS

1.   ATTENDANCE:  The following requirements must all be met to earn a varsity letter:

a.   A team member must not miss more than 8 practices.  (Extended illness will be taken into account with a physicians note.)  A combination of three late arrivals and/or three early releases equals one absence.

b.   Attendance is required at 100% of the meets (arrangements may be made with the head coach in the event of extenuating circumstances.)

c.   No more than one unexcused absence (practice or meets) is acceptable.

2.   PLUS:  At least one of the following must be met to earn a letter:

a.   Senior - Being a senior and having completed the season successfully.

b.   Junior - Being a junior and having competed and completed 3 years on the team.

c.   Points - For Swimming - average at least 3 points per dual or tri meet, 11 meets equals 33 points.  For Diving - 20 diving points or a total of 33 swimming and diving points.  A diver will letter if she scores 160 points (6 dive list) or 280 points (11 dive list.)

d.   Conference/Sections/State - Placing in the top 6 in an individual event at the conference meet.  Placing in the top 12/16 in an individual event, or in the top 6/8 in a relay event at the section meet.  Qualify for state.

e.   Coaches' Discretion - Swimmer may letter if a time is within 1% of the time standard.  Also, if the swimmer is less than 3 points away form the total letter points (30).  Behavior and attitude are taken into account.

TENNIS – BOYS/GIRLS

1.   To receive a varsity letter in tennis, a participant must play in 10 varsity matches.  To be part of the region team as an alternate may be counted as 1 match.  Playing exhibition in a varsity match does not count toward earning a letter.

2.   A senior who is in good standing who has played two or more years on the high school team will also earn a letter.

 

TRACK & FIELD – BOYS/GIRLS

1.   Earn team points in seven (7) varsity meets and invitational or place in the top five in the Conference meet or place in the Section meet.

2.   Meet and obey all Minnesota State High School League rules.

3.   Complete the entire season.

4.   Do four (4) community service events in two areas.

a.   Track related events:

      Track concession stands

      Middle school and JV meets

      Elementary field day

b.   Community events:

      School events (spring carnival)

      Church events

      Middle school mini courses

      School club events and activities

      Other approved by coaches

5.   Coaches reserve the right to letter any individual whose conduct and attitudes contributes to the success of the team, regardless of the number of meets he or she has earned point in during the season.

6.   Coaches also reserve the right to withhold letters from individuals who display conduct and attitudes detrimental to the success of the team, regardless of meeting the above criteria.

7.   Managers need two years of service to letter.

 

VOLLEYBALL

1.      To be awarded a letter in volleyball the athlete must fulfill one of the following criteria:

a.   be a senior and have participated in volleyball for 4 years.

b.   be a varsity team member and participate in 50% of the varsity games.

c.   be a member of the official tournament team.

2.   The coaching staff may award a letter because of an extenuating situation.

3.   Coaches reserve the right to withhold letters from individuals who display conduct and attitudes detrimental to the success of the team, regardless of meeting the above criteria.

4.   Managers need two years of service to letter.

5.   All final lettering decisions are made at the discretion of the coach.

 

WRESTLING

1.   85% Attendance rate (Throughout the coarse of the season excused absences may not exceed 15% of all practices.)

2.   12 varsity points required (forfeits do not count).

3.   Must volunteer for 4 elementary practices

4.   Violation of MSHSL Rules or suspension from team will result in forfeiture of varsity letter.

5.   Coaches reserve the right to letter any individual who has displayed high quality attributes of a Wildcat wrestler. (Ex. Perfect attendance, extra youth practices, community volunteerism, etc.)

 

SUMMER WEIGHT LIFTING

1.   Attend 80% of sessions (NO excused or unexcused absences)

2.   Participate in ALL weight lifting and ALL speed training activities (NO INJURY EXCUSES)

3.   Be on time: If you are 5 minutes late or later the day will not count toward lettering

4.   Record results for all core lifts

 

WINTER POWERLIFTING

An athletic letter can be earned by participants if they attend 85% of the workouts and compete in the season ending Wishbone Performance Meet competition.

 

STUDENT ATHLETIC TRAINING ASSISTANT

1.      45 hours per season in athletic training room (roughly 2.5 afternoons/week)

2.      Observe at least 6 competitions (must include at least one of each varsity sport in season)

3.      Complete one of the following projects:

a.       Research project on athletic training career (one page paper, poster board, PowerPoint, etc.

b.      One-page review of peer-reviewed article in athletic training journal (see trainer)

c.       Case study/write-up of injured professional athlete (see trainer)

4.      Assistants must be on time for all assignments and training room hours

5.      No unexcused absences from sideline assignments

6.      Observe all guidelines and policies outlined in application.

 

 

FINE ARTS

 

Fine Arts points will be awarded by the advisor of each individual activity.  Each student’s points will be entered into a computer program in the activities office or music office.  Points are accumulated throughout the student’s high school career.  A student must have a total of 200 points in at least two different activities in order to receive a Fine Arts letter.

 

It is the student’s responsibility to contact any particular advisor regarding the number of points they have coming to them.  Failure to do so by April 1 of any calendar school year will result in the loss of these points.  The object is to put the responsibility on the student, not the teacher.  Near the end of the school year point totals will be posted, and awards will be prepared accordingly.

 

BAND

1.   Attending college or professional concerts (approved by supervisor) – 5

BUSINESS PROFESSIONALS OF AMERICA (BPA)

1.   In order to receive a letter for participation in Business Professionals of America, a person must meet the following criteria:

      a.   All criteria from Category 1

            and

            Two criteria from Category 2

            or

      b.   Meet criteria for Automatic Lettering

2.   The advisor will make the final decision.

      CATEGORY 1 – DEDICATION

§  Must be a member of BPA for one year

§  Must attend three practice sessions before competing at the Regional Level

§  Must have regular attendance to meetings, unless excused by Advisor

§  Must participate in three competitive events at the Regional Level

            CATEGORY 2 – SERVICE AND LEADERSHIP

§  Work at least 20 hours of community service for a worthy cause (local food shelf, homeless shelter, etc.)

§  Serve as Chisago Lakes High School Chapter president

§  Serve as Regional Officer

§  Assist with the set-up and clean-up of club activities

§  Assist with the set-up and clean-up of the Employer Luncheon

§  Compete at the State Leadership Conference two different years

§  Member of BPA for three years

 

AUTOMATIC LETTERING

DECA (An Association of Marketing Students)

1.   Must be a Junior or Senior

2.   Must join DECA at the national level ($11 annual dues)

3.   Mandatory attendance at the annual DECA Fall Leadership Conference

4.   Mandatory attendance and participation at the District 4 competitive events conference and participation in at least 3 events

5.   Qualification for the DECA state competitive events conference in at least one event following the district conference

6.   One comprehensive community service/partnership project approved and completed by the DECA student

7.   Demonstration of leadership, initiative, and enthusiasm for the Chisago Lakes High School Chapter

4.   All Link Leaders are to participate in all PAWZ activities.  If conflicts arise, it is the responsibility of the Link Leader to see one of the coordinators before the scheduled PAWZ activity date to make other arrangements.

5.   Link Leaders are to coordinate and plan at least one “Crew Activity”:

      * must have one Crew activity planned by 2nd week of school

      Plans are to be submitted to the commissioners. 

      Ideas: attend a game or activity together, study group, movie, bowling, lunch, coffee, dress up days, and dance.

6.   In addition, the Link Leaders must continue to comply with the code of conduct signed by students and parents. 

 

MATH LEAGUE

1.   The following procedure is used to determine how points can be earned.  A student needs 110 points in one year to letter.

a.   Attendance for Practices = 2 points/practice                    maximum 60

b.   Individual Events Scores = 2 points/each point scores     maximum 70

c.   Working Concessions = 10 points/hour                            maximum 30

2.   Any student contributing points toward a team qualification for state will automatically letter.

 

NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY

1.   Point Values:

a.   General Meetings (5 points)

b.   Concession Stand -  set up (15)       clean up (15)      sales (10)      during lunch (10)

c.   School and Community Service Projects (20-50)

      The judgment of point values to each project will be determined by the executive committee and approved by the advisor.  This will ensure the consistency of points awarded throughout the year and also the consistence from one year to the next.

2.      Each year the member must meet the 150-point minimum in order to letter for that year.  The following year the member must earn another 150 points to letter again.  The points are not carried over from year to year.

 

ROBOTICS TEAM

Students need to reach a total value of 100 points to letter.

1.   Attendance is required at 80% of team meetings and events such as the kick-off, and regional competition. (50 pts)

2.   Students should maintain a C+ or higher average. (10 pts)

3.   Special contribution to team (10 pts)

4.   Students should take a position of leadership to support the team acting as treasurer, compliance officer, project manager, communications liaison, etc. (20 pts)

5.   Students should participate in a variety of tasks such as robot design, inventory, administrative, committee work, community relations, contacting the press, etc. (20 pts)

6.   Students can earn points by competing in FRC-related competitions such as website design, and animation. (20 pts)

7.   Recommendation by a vote of all mentors is required. (Final OK)

 

STUDENT COUNCIL

1.   Cannot letter if member has more than three absences from required meetings;

2.   Cannot letter if member fails to attend more than one required Council event;

3.   Cannot letter if member is late more than three times arriving at required events or leaves early;

4.   Must serve on two committees during the school year;

5.   Must soundly perform the duties and expectations of a Council member;

6.   Must achieve 100 points total for the year and a minimum of 15 points per term.

 

SADD Lettering Criteria

Attendance:  Points will be given to each member if they attend the scheduled meeting.  Morning meetings will be extra points.

Participation:  Students must be involved in at least 3-5 events.  Points will be given when the event starts up.  Doing work sessions, i.e-making posters, will result in extra points.  Becoming the chair of an event also results in extra points.
